Rashtrasant Tukadoji Maharaj Nagpur University has tremendous potential for introducing bachelor-level degree course in Aircraft Maintenance, with the Multi-modal International Cargo Hub and Airport (MIHAN), here. The University Grants Commission, in its notification issued on October 3, has designed curricular structure, encouraging the universities to introduce this subject in their campuses. The course would be under Choice Based Credit System (CBCS).

The syllabus for the course is available with the UGC and can be implemented by the higher education institutions. The Universities, however, are required to obtain the approval of Director General of Civil Aviation before adopting the syllabus. The permission is required so that standards and regulations for air safety and air worthiness are followed.

With MIHAN in the city, the students completing the course will have employment opportunities in their own city. In its perspective plan RTMNU has not submitted any such course, as the notification of the UGC was issued after submission of the perspective plan. When contacted Pro-VC of the University Dr Pramod Yeole stated that additional demand can be made for such a course, if affiliated colleges are interested in introducing the course.

Dr Yeole also agreed that the students completing this course will have employment opportunities in MIHAN.  Some private institutions had started training programme to prepare air hostess. However, the courses were closed because of lack of response and also for want of enough facilities with the institutions.

The University will have to follow the issue with Maharashtra Airport Development Company (MADC), so that the training facilities for the students can be made available. Providing the facilities at the university or any institutions will require heavy investment, which could be beyond the institution’s reach.
