West Central Railways (WCR) has increased the security layer to ensure safety to belongings of train commuters and passengers as well. In this regard, it has installed Close Circuit Television Cameras (CCTV) in coaches of selected trains. In future, CCTVs are also likely to be installed in some other trains as well.

The installation of CCTV cameras in premier and some selected trains has come as a big relief to passengers as now their bags and other belongings would be under watch of CCTV and in case of any theft, it would be easier for investigative officers to zero on the accused.
Official sources said that West Central Railway has equipped CCTV cameras in coaches of few trains passing through Bhopal division. Now, passengers need to worry less about safety of belongings as they would be under constant vigil of CCTV cameras.

Live recording of the camera in all coaches will be displayed in loco pilot room and security guards. At present, Railways has installed high resolution cameras with capacity of 1.3 MP in six coaches of three different trains. Railway authorities claimed that soon all trains passing through Bhopal division would be under camera surveillance. At present, cameras have been installed in train no 22172/22171 Habibganj-Pune-Habibganj, 22169/22170 Habibganj-Santragachi-Habibganj and Jammutavi-Nanded-Jammutawi Humsafar Express train.

Talking to ‘The Hitavada’ Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Shobhan Chaudhury said, “safety and security of passengers in moving train is our first priority. Keeping in view the rise in theft cases and crime in moving train, camera installation has been started in trains. Soon number of cameras will be increased in trains as well as railway stations.”

I A Siddique, Public Relations Officer (PRO) Bhopal, said, “We have started camera installation in premier trains and Humsafar Express in order to improve the security provision. There are planning to replace the coaches of several trains with LHB coaches and along with the coach replacement, cameras would also be installed.”

He further said apart from moving train, cameras are also being installed at railway stations for security purpose.
Siddique said, several complaints have been received repeatedly for security issues in moving train. Recently, two-three dacoity and many theft cases have been reported from several trains.

Last year many cases were reported in which women passengers were sexually harassed in moving train. On August 7, a labourer was arrested for allegedly raping a 30-year-old woman in moving train in Jabalpur district.
On November 26, 2017, 23-year-old woman vendor was allegedly raped onboard a passenger train passing Berkheda under Bhopal division. On July 11, a minor girl was allegedly gangraped by two men at the platform of Katni railway station.

If we talk about theft cases then on July 25, a robbery case was registered at GRP station in Itarsi in which armed robbers looted several passengers travelling in AP Express near Pandhurna station under Chhindwara.
On September 3, passengers of Ganga-Kaveri Express were looted by dacoits near Panhai station in Chitrakoot district.
