JMC faces residents wrath during encroachment drive

Anti-encroachment drive continues to bulldoze illegal dwellings situated on hills near Supatal

The anti-encroachment squad of Jabalpur Municipal Corporation (JMC) had on Monday to face wrath of people, who have been displaced from city hills. A number of people who have illegal houses on the hills near Supatal staged massive protest and restricted the squad from conducting drive and razing dwellings.


Local public representatives also reached the spot and demanded senior administrative and JMC officials to give more time to concerned families to vacate their houses. But officials denied giving further time and informed the public representatives that the drive has been conducted following the directions of the High Court.


Deputy Commissioner Rakesh Ayachi said the anti-encroachment squad on Monday continued the drive to bulldoze illegal dwellings situated on hills near Supatal. He said, on Monday the squad continued the drive till late in the night and razed six multi-story buildings. He said a number of people have erected big illegal structures on the hills. The squad razed a big 12 rooms house apart from an illegal multi-story structure got constructed on 10,000 square feet area.


He said some local representatives including MLA, Tarun Bhanot, Corporator Kewal Krishna Ahuja and others came at the spot and demanded time for families living on the hills. Ayachi said the local leaders were apprised that as the drive has been conducted following the directions of the High Court and concerned people had already been issued notices, they could not give additional time to concerned families.


It may be noted that to make city hills encroachment free, the anti-encroachment department of JMC along with district administration is carrying out drive and razing illegal permanent structures.


The squad on Sunday bulldozed nearly 15 permanent residential structures and got vacated 55 houses. Recently, it had completed the drive to raze illegal structures situated on Sharda Chowk to Madan Mahal. The administration had razed over 100 houses situated on the route. Earlier, the administration and JMC had dismantled over hundered illegal dwellings situated within 300-metre periphery of Madan Mahal fort and adjoining areas. Now, the JMC is conducting the joint drive on hills near Supatal and razing permanent structures. Ayachi said the squad would continue the drive on Tuesday and remove remaining structures.
