West Central Railway (WCR) inaugurated 250KWp roof-top solar power plant on Monday in presence of State Co-operative Minister (independent charge) Vishwas Sarang and Member of Parliament Alok Sanjar.
Additional Railway Manager (Operation) R S Rajput, Senior Division Electric Engineer (General) Harish Ranjan and other railway officers were present on the occasion. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Shobhan Chaudhury, Additional Division, was also present on the occasion. Alok Sanjar inaugurated 120KWp roof top solar plant at Bhopal station.

In addition to this 300 KWp roof-top solar power plant has been inaugurated at Itarsi Railway Station and 300 KWp roof top solar plants at electric loco shed at Itarsi station by Vidhan Sabha Speaker Sitasharan Sharma and MP Hoshangabad Uady Pratap Singh.

According to railway officials, total 970 KWp capacity roof-top solar power plant has been set up at different stations under the division which will be producing 30,000 units per month at Bhopal and 15,000 units per month at Division Rail Manager’s office. A total 1.6 million solar energy will be producing every year under the division and it will help to save Rs 40 per year.

WCR has moved its feat towards clean energy by installation of solar power panels at selected five platforms. After Hyderabad and Pune, it is the third railway station of country and first of Madhya Pradesh to use solar energy for lighting arrangement at platforms.

A private company from Gujarat has installed the solar power panels at various places of platforms. Bhopal railway will purchase power from this company at the rate of Rs 5.20 paise per unit. This will help it in cutting down expenditure on power bills in a great manner and the saved money could be used for other public welfare purpose. Solar panels at Bhopal station will be producing 750 kilowatt electricity every month. At present, railway purchases electricity worth Rs 12 lakh to 15 lakh per month.

The use of solar energy is going to help Bhopal railways in saving huge chunk of money annually. Solar panels and other equipment have being installed by the company itself and railway has not paid even a single penny in this regard. Railway has only provided the needed space. Officials said Railway has several plans to tap solar energy in a big way. Especially, it envisages to have roof-top solar plants to promote clean energy and utilise the spaces to meet its own power needs.

The roof-top plants have been already installed at few railway stations in Hyderabad and Pune. Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) Shobhan Chaudhury said, “It is Gujarat-based company which has designed the entire solar project meant for Bhopal Railway Station. Power produced through solar panels will help to meet our daily needs of electricity.”
