Polymer It’s societal role

In current era, good quality of life in the society is enhanced by the advancement in technology. This emerging advancement is enhanced by polymer, example food and packaging, textiles industries, advance printing machine, plastic products, fabricated metals, electrical/electronics, transport, construction, modern sophisticated medical, agriculture, equipments present in the market, which are manufactured by modified polymers and metals.

 


In Food And Packaging Industries
There will many types of polysaccharides which can be used as thickeners, tablet binding agent, emulsifiers and gelling agent in food industry and fiber forming agent in packaging industry. Starch is the one of the polysaccharides carbohydrates which is abundant in corn, potato, wheat, cassava etc.

In Agriculture
Poly Lactic Acid helps in seed coating which prevents the seed from damage during transportation and PLA coated seed degraded easily into the soil when it sown. Polymers of different grades used in restrained release of pesticides and nutrient, soil conditioning, seed coating and plant protection.

In Printing
Polymer and flexible electronics are termed as printable electronics. Previously printing is based on traditional silica based, inorganic materials. The major benefit of printable electronic generally includes low cost production, high material utilization efficiency, faster production ability to fabricate lightweight flexible product. Printable electronics develops silver ink to user in low cost as a printable material for example Xerox or photocopy machines.

In Plastic Product And Automobile
For enhancing polymer properties, mixing of polymers carried out, it is one of the way to increase impressive significance properties of polymer in the field of polymer science, for example- mixture of Polyvinylchloride (PVC) and Acrylonitrile butadiene elastics (NBR).
In automobiles, low weight to strength ratio has been turned up using natural fibre reinforced composites. Epoxy resin is the example of thermosetting polymer resin, used as a structural matrix material which is than reinforced by natural fibre materials. This Fibre Reinforced composite (FRC) used in load
bearing, light-weight structure because it have superior mechanical properties compared to
metal.

In Construction
For future generation, Carbon fibre and polymer composite used in preservation of worldwide historic building, civil engineering constructions like bridge and monuments which are steady decaying and damage in earthquakes. Polymers are used in residential and commercial construction materials, for example- Exterior door/frame assemblies, including overhead doors, Supports and isolators for pipes and cables in steel stud construction, Electrical insulators, Caulk and sealant: polyurethane, acrylic, silicone, Adhesives, Expansion joints, Wall covering: vinyl, other plastic, synthetic, or natural fabric, Suspended ceiling tiles: plastic film-faced fiberglass, Door and drawer bearings and rollers: nylon or other plastics, Sanitary cladding: fiberglass-reinforced plastic (FRP), Concrete reinforcement: glass or plastic fiber; epoxy-coated rebar, plastic rebar, Imitation ceramic wall tile, Wood-frame construction (cellulose, a naturally occurring polymer), More uses loom in the future, Insulation: foam board, foamed-in-place, Insulated sheathing: polystyrene, polyethylene, House wrap, Vapor barriers, Plastic anchors for concrete, masonry, Exterior cladding: vinyl siding, trim, Porch and deck railing materials, Ductwork, including spiral-wire plastic duct with insulation and plastic facing, Heating, ventilating, and air -conditioning (HVAC) air supply and vent pipe, Electric conduit and conductor insulation, Plumbing fixtures: bathtubs, showers, laundry tubs, sinks, washer boxes, Drain tile, left-in-place concrete forms, waste and vent piping, water piping, radiant heat tubing, Electrical wiring, boxes, devices, and fixtures, Fire alarm system components: horn-strobes, pull stations, smoke detectors, Insulation vents in attic eaves, Soffit and fascia panels, Gutters and downspouts, Roofing materials and skylight panels, Central vacuum system pipes and ducts, Dryer vent pipe, Fuel gas piping, Exhaust and air-supply fans, Safety glazing: acrylic, polycarbonate, Flooring: vinyl composition tile, sheet goods, carpet, baseboard, fake ceramic tile, Fire sprinkler piping, residential: CPVC, Paint and wood finishes: acrylic, polycarbonate, polyurethane, latex, Millwork, trim, box beams, and cornices use a variety of extruded and foamed plastics, Countertops: plastic laminates and solid materials, Window sash: solid plastic, plastic-clad wood, Exterior insulating foam system (EIFS).

In Electronics
LEDs containing conducting polymers are very popular in society. Polymer Light Emitting Diodes (PLED’s) based on PPV are commercial product due to fast response times. PSS and Polyaniline (PANI) are most popular materials, these two materials are conjugated polymers with excellent mechanical stability, flexibility and they can achieve a high conductivity and transparency. One of the great development is the use of conductive polymer such as polyphenylene vinylene emit light when sandwiched between oppositely charged electrodes, thus enabling flat panel display designs to be made for television and computers.

Conclusion
These all are possible due to wide range of physical, mechanical and chemical properties of polymer such as good mechanical strength, easily administered, inexpensive, easy fabricated, inert and compatible with environment.
