Former Union Minister of State for Home and senior Congress leader Subodh Kant Sahay on Tuesday said that it is the ‘Development bullet’ not the police that can eradicate Naxalism in the country.

Addressing a press conference at Rajiv Bhawan in Raipur, senior Congress leader Sahay said that Naxalism is entirely a socio-economic problem and Congress would bring a development model to combat the menace in Chhattisgarh if the party is voted to power in the state.

Lambasting the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) Government for its misrule, Sahay said that Chhattisgarh state has been transformed into a ‘land of corruption and loot’. The people of the state are still forced to drink contaminated water especially in Bastar region. The people in Chhattisgarh are still struggling for basic amenities like potable water in 15 years of BJP rule, he added. Sahay alleged that Chhattisgarh and Jharkhand are facing the same problem i.e naxalism and loot culture under BJP rule.

Former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh-led United Progressive Alliance (UPA) Government had given right to food and right to job (MNREGA) acts to the country but National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government has either abolished the provisions or weakened it. The UPA government had made Backward Region Grant Fund (BRGF) and given the special power to collectors and superintendents of police from Naxal affected districts of the country for sanctioning funds for basic amenities. “Collectors and SPs from Naxal infested districts were fully authorized to take decision on the spot if they found any requirement of backward areas. But the NDA government abolished it,” he added.

The UPA government had made provision of Rs 84,00, 000 crore for MNREGA while Prime Minister Narendra Modi Government reduced the budget for the MNREGA and allocated only Rs 28,00,000 crore for it, said the former Union Minister. Sahay alleged that Chhattisgarh government failed to fulfil the hopes of common people of the state. One minute silence was observed in the press conference to pay tributes to martyred Doordarshan cameraman Achyutanand Sahu, who was killed in a Naxal attack in Dantewada district on Tuesday.

Chhattisgarh Media In-charge and AICC National Media Panelist Jaiveer Shergill, Radhika Khera, were also present. Earlier, former Union Minister Sahay campaigned for the party candidates in poll-bound Bastar region.
