Shinde had a narrow escape after sand smugglers allegedly tried to mow them down by a tipper near Bhiwapur railway crossing in Umrer taluka on Nagpur-Gadchiroli Road, Tuesday morning. Kadam, Shinde and their team were initiating action against the truck drivers for smuggling
illegally excavated sand in their vehicles.

The team got information that a tipper laden with illegally excavated sand was coming from neighbouring Bhandara district. The team spotted the tipper around 8.30 am. Shinde signalled the driver to stop but he tried to run over him. Shinde jumped on the roadside and escaped unhurt. Kadam somehow climbed the running tipper and stood on its footrest asking the driver to stop. The driver did not stop and drove Kadam up to village Uti, about 15 kilometre from the spot. Kadam jumped off the tipper after it slowed down on a turning.

A car (MH-40/BJ-0424) was following the sand-laden tipper. The person sitting in the car was giving instructions to the tipper driver on his mobile phone. The news spread like jungle fire in Umrer and Nagpur. Revenue staff in Umrer resorted to pen-down strike demanding immediate arrest of the sand smugglers.

A police officer told ‘The Hitavada’ that the footage of CCTV camera procured by investigators shows that there were
only three persons -- Tehsildar Kadam and Naib Tehsildars Yogesh Shinde and Hatwar -- checking trucks and tippers transporting sand. Tehsildar had not taken any police protection during the drive against sand mafia, he added. After recording the statement of Naib Tehsildar Shinde, he said, Umrer Police launched a search for the sand smugglers.
