Six involved in smuggling of rare sand boa snake held

Govindpura police have nabbed six snake smugglers and recovered a rare two-headed ‘Sand Boa’ snake worth Rs 10 lakh from their possession late on Monday night.
Police said that two Sehore-based persons who came to Bhopal and here they were trying to a sell ‘Sand Boa’ snake while two others who were trying to purchase the snake with the help of two middlemen from them near Security Lines area were detained late in the night on Monday.
The accused were arrested after police team swung into action on the receipt of the information of persons in the area moving suspiciously.

According to SHO of Govindpura, Ashok Singh Parihar, the nabbed persons who brought Sand Boa snake were identified as Jagdish Jathav (35) and Omprakash Meena (40) of Sehore district. The buyers who came to buy the snake were identified Sandeep Kurre (26) of Baghsewania, Harish Kurre (27) of Awadhpuri, Ravi Naamdev (28) of Habibganj and Arif Shah (20) of Gandhi Nagar.

The officials of Forest Department were informed after the accused were nabbed were handed over to the department with seized sand boa snake for further investigation. The police have started investigation into the matter of the involvement of accused in smuggling of Sand Bao snakes in the past. After the preliminary investigation the police have registered a case under sections 9, 39, 48 A and 51 of the Wildlife Protection Act-1972.

Notably on October 23, Shahpura police arrested two babas-Deepak Nath and Amir Nath-from Bairagarh Cheechli area and recovered two ‘Sand Boa’ snakes from them. Before it in June this year, a team of Special Task Force (STF) arrested 5 persons, Shankar Tomar, Mukesh Bhargava, Lakhan, Ehrar Khan and Daulatram Lodha with 3 ‘Sand Boa’ snakes from Katara Hills are and base on their information, held 5 more-Vishnu Bairagi, Dashrath Singh, Naresh, Patel, Hukumnath and Nawab Khan with 4 snakes.The sand boa snakes cost lakhs of rupees depending upon their size in the local market while the cost may vary in international market and could fetch massive amount which attracts the smugglers to smuggle ‘Sand Boa’ snakes.
