Police arrest demonstrating Asha-Usha workers

The dharna of Asha-Usha workers continued at Polytechnic Square even on Wednesday. The situation became tense when one of the protesting women climbed on the tower and when cops tried to bring her down, she fell down. She sustained head injury and was immediately rushed to hospital. Later, police arrested demonstrating Asha-Usha workers and took them to jail. Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh has censured the police action.


It was from last two days that Asha and Usha workers were staging sit-in at Polytechnic Square situated near CM House, demanding hike in their honorarium. They tried to meet CM but to no avail. They staged dharna by sitting on road and slept on pavement along with their children under open sky during night. The situation started to turn out of control on Wednesday as the protest done by Asha and Usha workers took the aggressive shape.


In support of demand, one of the protesting women climbed on tower and seeing this, a band of cops also climbed on tower to bring down the woman. When cops were bringing down the women from tower, woman fell down along with some cops. She sustained head injury. Seeing this, already agitated Asha and Usha workers went berserk and started to attack the cops. Police personnel any how controlled the situation and rushed injured woman to government hospital for treatment. In the meantime, police cracked the whip by going on arrest spree of demonstrating women. CSP Kotwali Badria Prasad Verma told ‘The Hitavada’ that injured woman has been admitted to the hospital. Moreover, he told that demonstrating Asha and Usha workers have been arrested.

Total 86 demonstrating women have been arrested and sent to jail. Notably, many women have come along with their children to do the demonstration. Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh condemned the police action and also came down heavily on Chief Minister. He demanded that arrested Asha workers and their children should be immediately released. He told that it was from last one month that Asha workers were demanding hike in their honorarium. It was from last two days that they were demonstrating along with their children but CM did not bother to hear their woes. He was of the view that already central government has increased the honorarium of Asha workers and state government needs to only give its share to sanction the honorarium. Government held three consecutive Cabinet meetings but maintained silence on issue related to Asha workers. He demanded that arrested women should be immediately released and government should sanction the honorarium.
