VNIT to probe incident of students’ illness, makes arrangement for girls’ food

Taking serious cognisance of the incident of mass illness of its girl students, Visvesvaraya National Institute of Technology (VNIT) administration has decided to conduct a probe into the incident. Meanwhile, it has made a temporary arrangement for the girl students’ food in its other mess in the campus itself. Total 3,500 students pursue various courses in VNIT. It has two major hostels of 1,000 capacity each plus about 4 small hostels catering to needy boys and girls students.


During last week, around 150 students were admitted to various hospitals of city with a complaint of throat infection. Some of the students were diagnosed with food-poisoning, some with dengue, some with pharyngitis, hospitals sources quoted to which VNIT administration also did not deny.


The students in large number staged demonstration at VNIT pressing the demand that administration should take measures on the issue. VNIT administration has already conducted audit of the total incident. It will also be holding probe into the incident. The administration, while talking to ‘The Hitavada’ said, “We are very much concerned about the whole episode and sensitive also. We consider ourselves as the guardians of the students, and will not leave any stone unturned while taking measures. In VNIT hostel, for different hostels, there are separate mess. Temporarily, we have made the arrangement at different mess for girl students. The food samples have already been given to Food and Drugs Administration and their report is awaited. Once we received the report, and if anybody found guilty then we will not spare the wrong-doer.”


Meanwhile, VNIT students staged demonstration in front of office of the Director on Thursday and demanded action against the guilty.  The sources at VNIT made it clear that all students got discharged and all have reached their respective rooms in hostels.

‘Suspend Catering Superintendent’
A delegation of Yuva Sena, under the leadership of its Yuva Adhikari Hitesh Yadav met Director Dr Pramod Padole and submitted a memorandum. Yadav brought to the notice of VNIT administration about the feelings of the students and general public over the incident. Yuva Sena has claimed that VNIT assured them of suspending the contractor
who served food to students in hostels.
