Awareness, discipline among youth must to strengthen democracy: CEC

Generating awareness and inculcating discipline among youth is essential for strengthening democracy in India. The university is taking initiative in this direction and introducing the subject in curriculum is worth appreciating, said Chief Election Commissioner J S Saharia.

Saharia was delivering inaugural address of a national seminar on ‘Democracy, Elections and Good Governance’, organised by Post-graduate Department of Political Science of RTM Nagpur University, at Guru Nanak Bhavan, on Friday. Pro-VC of the University Dr Pramod Yeole presided over. Dr Valerian Rodrigues, Professor at Dr Ambedkar Chair, Dr Ambedkar University, Delhi, was the chief guest. Head of the Department of Political Science Dr Mohan Kashikar, Associate Professor Dr Vikas Jambhulkar, Seminar Convenor Dr Jitendra Wasnik, NS University NSS Director Dr Keshav Walke were present on the dais.

By awakening students through colleges, they can be informed about real meaning of democracy. This will also ensure election of the right candidate. The Election Commission has taken step to ensure enrollment of the students at the time of entry into the college, Saharia said. He gave information about the election process and appealed to the teachers to support research in the field.

Dr Rodrigues said that non-violence is the essence of democracy and the values should be inculcated among the students. The students should be trained for effective implementation of democracy in the country.

Dr Yeole said elections and democracy are two sides of the same coin. The success of democratic system depends on success of local self government bodies. Prof Surpiya David conducted the proceedings. Dr Vikas Jambhulkar proposed a vote of thanks.
