Staff Reporter,

Cancer is totally curable disease. People should not consider Cancer as their death certificate. Cancer can be treated effectively if it is detected in early stage, expressed Dr Ajay Mehta, Director and Head of Surgical Oncology and Dr Suchitra Mehta, Director and Head of Psycho Oncology on Friday. They were interacting with noted anchor Renuka Deshkar during the programme ‘Fakta Ladha Mhana’ organised by Saptak and HCGNCHRI Cancer Centre at Scientific Society Hall, Laxmi Nagar. This was the first interactive programme of the awareness series aimed to create awareness about cancer in society by Saptak and HCGNCHRI.

Dr Ajay Mehta defined cancer as a disease of rapid uncontrolled multiplication of cells in body. A person with lifestyle diseases like diabetes, blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, asthma, etc., have to take medicines throughout the life. This is not the case with cancer. If diagnosed early, cancer could be cured within six months, he added. Dr Mehta appealed audience to remove fear of cancer from mind, because a person cannot get cancer suddenly. The body starts giving number of symptoms at early stage. Correct diagnosis can save persons from cancer, he added.

In India, 12 lakh new cases of cancer are seen each year. It is just a tip of iceberg. India is a developing country and 60 to 70 per cent cancer cases diagnosed each year are mostly in third or fourth stage. This is not the case in developed countries like USA because of awareness about cancer. 90 to 95 per cent cancer cases in USA are diagnosed in zero stage. There are 99 to 100 per cent chances of curing of cancer when diagnosed in stage zero, Dr Mehta stated.

Dr Suchitra Mehta pointed out, “Environmental factors may be the one of prominent reasons to cause cancer. Pollution in any form, wrong dietary habits, lack of facilities of early diagnosis, etc., are the reasons for cancer.” She also discussed a term CAUTION (C-Change in Bowel or bladder habits; A-A sore than does not heal; U-Unusual bleeding of discharge; T-Thickening or lump in breast or elsewhere; I-Indigestion or difficulty in swallowing; O-Obvious change in wart or mole; N- Nagging Cough or hoarseness) as a reason for cancer. Dr Mehta elaborated on different modern diagnostic techniques like PET Scan, CT Scan, Targeted Chemotherapy, sero tactic radio surgery, etc., available in city.Dr Uday Gupte introduced the panel experts.
