Alert constable foils widow’s attempt to end life in Lower Lake

A 50-YEAR-OLD widow was rescued by police personnel and locals who tried to commit suicide by jumping into Lower Lake near Kali Mandir in wee hours on Sunday. A constable of Talaiya police station on duty acted swiftly to rescue the woman.

Constable Narmada Prasad Karpatri while talking to ‘The Hitavada’ said that at around 3 am on Saturday two boys rushed towards him while he was standing outside the gate of Talaiya police station after a woman was found drowning by them at ghat near Kali Mandir, few steps away from police station after which he rushed to her rescue and Dial-100 FRV was informed.

With the help of a local boy Rupesh, constable Karpatri rescued drowning woman and later in the investigation she was identified as Mayawati (50), a resident of Jagrati Nagar area of Pushpa Nagar in Aishbagh locality. Initially, the woman was unable to provide any information which raised suspicion that she might have been pushed into the lake but later in the early morning her son arrived and informed that she had left home on Saturday evening without informing the family members.

The woman told police that her husband died a few years ago and she used to live with her children in Pushpa Nagar area and there is dispute in her family since long. Fed up of the fights within the family she wanted to end her life and jumped into Lower Lake.

During investigation, police found that she used to have fights with family but the reason of the fights remained unclear as police tried to convince the woman who was in shock and was unable to speak after she was rescued. Police have not taken any action against the woman.
