Staff Reporter,

A JMFC Court in Umrer remanded tipper driver Shahrukh Sheikh alias Harun Sheikh and mechanic Avinash alias Ashwin Pralhad Dhone, who were arrested for allegedly attempting to kill Tehsildar and Naib Tehsildar, to magisterial custody (MCR) on Thursday.

Umrer Police had arrested driver Shahrukh Sheikh alias Harun Sheikh (24), a resident of Bahadura; and truck mechanic Avinash alias Ashwin Pralhad Dhone (35), a resident of Pachgaon, after Naib Tehsildar Yogesh Shinde had lodged a complaint that they tried to mow him down by a tipper near Bhiwapur railway crossing on Tuesday.

Shinde had stated that he along with Tehsildar Pramod Kadam and others were initiating action against truck drivers for smuggling illegally excavated sand in their vehicles when the incident took place.

Bowing to intense pressure by Revenue officials, police arrested them Shahrukh Sheikh and Avinash Dhone on charges under Sections 307, 353 and 34 of the Indian Penal Code. Police also had detained the tipper and the car.
Cops produced accused Shahrukh Sheikh and Avinash Dhone before the court on Thursday.

Seeking five-day police custody remand (PCR) of the accused duo, the prosecution told the court that their custodial interrogation was necessary. Defence lawyers pointed out to the court that their clients were falsely implicated in the case. The Tehsildar and two Naib Tehsildars, wearing Bermuda shorts, were ‘checking’ trucks and no policeman was with them, they added.  After hearing both the sides, the court remanded the accused duo to magisterial custody.
