Forest Department launches 3 IT apps

Forest Department has launched three information technology (IT) applications for safeguarding jungle boundaries, managing court cases and innovative research to bring efficiency in the working with limited man power, resources and infrastructure.


AsTra (Asset Tracker), a mobile application developed by 6Simplex Software Solutions, Nagpur, enables monitoring of foot patrolling besides the application provides for capturing greater details of assets and events. The events include illicit felling, grazing, poaching, man-animal conflict, forest fire, encroachment while assets include capital assets like forest rest houses, buildings, nurseries, forest tanks etc. This was disclosed by Praveen Srivastava, Additional Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (IT, Policy), while addressing a press conference at Command Control Room, Van Bhavan, here on Thursday. He said, asset tracker app is available on Ply Store and can be downloaded by authorised users of the department. Post downloading app, the staff may switch on app and start foot patrolling as this gets recorded as trail in black colour on Geo-digitized maps of the designated area of the particular staff.


The field staff would be able to click photos of assets as well as events with essential fields that. They can capture video to identify trouble spots, he said adding that HQ could keep watch on the situation across Maharashtra. Thus, near real-time forest governance by capturing essential and necessary issues of conservation, protection and wildlife could be possible by this application. The department has also developed and commissioned a Court Case Managing System, an online app for managing department’s court cases all over the State. It will help track status of cases and also notify concerned officials about their court hearings. The department is facing over 8,000 court cases, he added. Srivastava said that the department also introduced a feature ‘Innovative Research’ on its website through which institutes and researchers can submit their forestry related research to the department. Raju Dhabekar, Vivek Choudhary, Shashank Raut, Dilip Deshpande, Snehal Patil and others were present at the press conference.
