CORRIDOR OF PEACE

THERE should be no doubt in anybody’s mind about the utility of the Kartarpur Sahib Corridor. Not only will the corridor facilitate devotees to access the famous and holy Darbar Sahib Gurudwara in Pakistan, but also pave way to a better connect between the peoples of India and Pakistan in future. If this experiment succeeds, which it promises will, then Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi may try its replication in other regions as well. This is one peace initiative to which there will be no opposition from any quarters, including from those in Pakistan. However, the only sour note at the project’s foundation stone-laying ceremony was the threatening language used by Punjab Chief Minister Mr. Amarinder Singh. He said, in effect, that Pakistan should not forget that India had a bigger Army than Pakistan’s and it can beat any enemy. At a peace initiative, such a language should never have been used. No matter that, we feel, the Kartarpur Corridor will make a positive difference to Indo-Pak ties.

NO HOMEWORK?

FRESH directives by the Union HRD Ministry have prescribed no homework for students of classes I and II. It is a direction based on the premise of not burdening students with extra academic work at home. Homework has been a long standing point of debate in education, especially primary classes. Most are of the view that assigning studies at home is robbing children’s family time. Yet, this is just one side of the coin. As much it is the responsibility of schools to ensure academic progress of kids, it is also the bounden duty of parents to add to their achievements through non-academic skills through homework. Taking homework as a strictly academic activity is an unwise stand. Studies have found that there is a significant correlation between homework and academic achievements. The syllabus for Class I and II is just an introduction to academics. Assigning homework with a view to enhance their extracurricular skills is a process of children’s development. Instead of ‘no homework’ stress should be laid on ‘meaningful homework’.
