During the special drive, 259 water consumers paid Rs 63.09 lakh to avoid disconnection

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) and Orange City Water (OCW) snapped water connection of 519 high-value consumers as they allegedly ‘failed to respond to repeated notices’ in this regard.

During a special drive conducted between October 22 and October 31, NMC-OCW teams visited homes of 1,783 defaulters. NMC-OCW snapped 519 connections across the city, while 259 consumers paid Rs 63.09 lakh and avoided disconnection. There are 4,230 high-value private consumers who owe water bills arrears totalling to Rs 48 crore. NMC-OCW stated in a press release that stern action like filing of First Information Report (FIR), disconnection of taps, warrant action, seizure would be initiated against water tax defaulters.

NMC-OCW had launched Amnesty Scheme twice in last two years. However, most of the defaulters did not turn up to take advantage of the scheme, stated the press release. Hence, NMC has planned to resort to stern action against these rigid defaulters. In 2016-17, of a total 54,702 defaulters, only 19,699 consumers took advantage of one-time settlement scheme and paid Rs 11.78 crore. In 2017-18, of 1,74,041 defaulters only 32,283 took advantage of the scheme and cleared dues worth Rs 13.02 crore.

This year, NMC-OCW has formed special teams in each zone dedicated to the task of initiating action against defaulters. Between October 21 and October 31, these teams visited the residences of defaulters to recover the water bill arrears. The defaulters, whose water connections have already been severed, and they are still reluctant to clear their dues, will get warrants and seizure of their assets will be started to recover the dues, stated NMC-OCW press release.

If defaulters try to create obstruction in disconnection drive or seizure drive, stern action like filing of FIR will be initiated against them, it added.  NMC-OCW have appealed to the defaulters to save themselves from such actions by clearing all the dues of water bills in a week.
