On the eve of Diwali on Tuesday Steel City Bhilai witnessed massive traffic jams in many markets thereby dampening the festive spirit. It exposed the tall claims made by the authorities who had assured residents that elaborate plans have been made to keep the city jam-free.

While commuters complained of huge jams across the city markets, the traffic police personnel remained in denial. ‘There is no jam in any market in the city,” said Rupesh Kumar a traffic police personnel at Supela Square. In the city markets like Jawahar Market Power House, Supela and Akashganga markets the roads were blocked with traffic. It took commuters more than half an hour to cross the road in Akashganga and Powr House markets.

“I was hopping a jam, so I started early by guess that was not enough as here I am struck, in jam for the last half an hour,” said Sanjeev Pandey, a resident of Surya Apartments who was on his way to Akashganga Market for shopping.
The stretch from Supela Sqaure to Gada Chowk in Bhiali also saw heavy traffic. Manoj Tiwari a resident of Shanti Nagar who was struck on this stretch, said, “There was no planning on the part of administration and police which is why commuters are facing such a problem.” On Power House Market traffic moved at a snail’s pace and the point before the Power House Railway Station on the high way the worst affected. It was very difficult for the customers to park their vehicles and also to enter the shops due to the jam. The absence of police and traffic personnel only added to chaos.
