Acclaimed Marathi actress Girija Oak, who has featured in Hindi movies like Taare Zameen Par and Shor in the City, is currently working in Sony Entertainment Television’s new show Ladies Special. Talking about the show, Girija revealed that she was scared to join the show as she finds Hindi television very different from reality...

It’s your debut Hindi daily drama series. How did the role come to you?
It is my debut Hindi series because I have been saying no to even auditions of Hindi series since 10-12 years now. There have been a number of shows for which I was asked to come and meet or test or take the discussion further but I did not feel comfortable until now. This came my way because I happened to do a very interesting feature film that Optimystix produced. We happened to meet the entire team at production house and somebody suggested my name. I did a very casual kind of a test and they really liked it. I got very cold feet after the test stressing whether this was the right choice, will it get like all the other shows where it starts off on a good note but then later there’s family and kitchen drama.

What inspired you to take the show?
I had a very meaningful conversation with Mr. Vipul D. Shah, the owner of production house Optimystix. Before that I was very skeptical to work within Hindi television because what I saw on Hindi television barring just a few shows was very glossy and extremely dramatic and far away from reality, for me. It looked pretty and nice but I wasn’t sure if I wanted to be a part of something like that. I was told that the show is going to be different and when I was told the story and the outline, I also realized that it really is different and that conversation changed my mind completely. That’s when I decided to come on board.

Can you tell us about your character in the show?
The show is real representation of people who watch the show. The show is very true to the lives of people living in Mumbai right now. It speaks about little troubles and little disappointments, joys and achievements in everybody’s life. The show is extremely aspirational and positive, so it is not fretting and fussing over daily life; like the fact that there isn’t enough money to go to holidays or similar problems. The show is much more than this and it’s about looking at the brighter side of life.

Each story in the show talks about something positive, something nice happens to each of these girls and they make it happen to themselves. For my character, her name is MeghanaNikade. Meghana is a housewife so far, she is married happily, has two kids, has a father- in- law, who is paralysed and on a wheel chair but they share a beautiful bond. She is not somebody who is complacent with her current situation; she wants to grow, want to do her own business and achieve more. She is a ambitious and hardworking girl who wants good life for herself which I thought was very special about her and probably why I accepted to work for the show and play Meghana. For more tune in to Ladies Special starting Nov 27, Mon-Fri at 9:30 pm on Sony TV.
