DESPITE grave warnings by their own scientific experts and high level authorities, political leadership in the US led by President Mr. Donald Trump and some of the European leaders refuse to see the gravity of dangers of climate change. The irony is that, according to the latest report prepared by US experts, the US President refuses to believe that the phenomenon of global warming is the outcome of human activity. Nor does he understand the science behind global warming. While he may continue to ignore these warnings, he cannot overlook the economic, health consequences of global warming, the report laments. Out of such ignorance the US and some European nations remain stubborn in opposing operationalisation of the rule book on climate change based on the historic Paris Agreement. While some of the countries, including India, have already begun to take steps to control carbon emissions by seeking alternative energy sources, these efforts remain pathetically inconsequential as the developed nations refuse to fall in line.

GST EVASION

NO MATTER stringent regulations and systems in place, there is always a deceitful element that keeps devising newer ways to bypass the mechanism for unethical gains. The detection of GST evasion worth Rs. 12,000 crore in last eight months (till November) points to the loopholes in the system that need to be plugged at the earliest. Some Smart Alecs have found a way to evade even the e-Way Bill mechanism which is a cause of concern for the Government. The Goods and Services Tax (GST) was introduced by subsuming various local taxes to bring the tax mechanism under one umbrella. After initial hiccups the industry warmed up to the mechanism as was evident in the high compliance rate. Yet, if there are still gaps that the dishonest element has managed to exploit, then the system needs immediate transformation through a rigid framework. While the Government went slow in the initial months, it cannot stretch the leeway anymore. Improving compliance mechanism and putting in place harsh deterrents is the need of the hour.
