What you believe to be true becomes the reality

By T G L IYER,

R obert Schuller says: “Keep on succeeding; for only successful people can help others”. People go to work to succeed and not to fail. Success seems to be largely a matter of hanging on when others have let go. Adversity forces us out of our comfort zone and we don’t like that. It is when we get out of the comfort zone that we grow and become better people. We discover abilities that we never knew we possessed. All of a sudden the adversity has passed and we are left with the benefit. The pain and anxiety are forgotten. My teacher used to say: “Set your goals not only in your mind but also in your heart. Goals that live only with mind without emotional commitment often become little more than wishes.

For true success you need to feel a desire to reach your goal that it occupies both your head and heart. When this happens, you will have created passion with purpose as there is no more winning combination than that.” Success is guaranteed if we pursue our goals with full belief in achieving it. Success is not a one step destination but an ongoing experience on our journey into the future. We must continuously be setting ourselves goals as we achieve those we set earlier. Spontaneous little successes that we achieve en route are part of the process and as long as we commit ourselves to the journey, we will experience ultimate success.

You can love those around you but you cannot do that forever. Winners are people who don’t find excuses. They don’t procrastinate and they don’t say that they can’t do a thing for some fictional reason. The saying is that when you really want to do something, you will find a way. When you don’t, you find an excuse. Our chance is now. Everyday can be a fresh start if we want it to be. So don’t look for reasons not to get on with it. Don’t say that you will start to diet, give-up smoking or think about asking the Bank Manager to give a loan. Do everything now and don’t postpone to a future date. All it takes is a clearly defined goal that is in keeping with your core values and that you are passionately committed to.

Do it now as you don’t want to look back a decade or two from now wishing that the chance will come back again which is only a dream. There is an old Chinese proverb which says: “Fall over seven times and get up eight times”. The core message is to persist again and again. People fail quite simply because they give-up and stop trying, mostly just after their first setback. The average child falls while learning to walk. Every time the child falls, it will get back on its feet again and succeed, may be after several falls. Failure is our teacher on the road to success. They define failure for lack of inspiration or ability or to misfortune. At the core of every talent there is an awareness of the difficulties inherent in any achievement. On the contrary, we gain confidence by persistence and patience worthwhile to reach a target.

Success will follow failure. There is no successful person who has not met and overcome failure. There is always a lesson to be learnt from failure. People of mediocre ability sometimes achieve outstanding success because they don’t know when to quit. Most men succeed because they are determined to fight one more round. When your feet are so tired that you have to shuttle back to the centre of the ring, fight one more round. When your arms are so tired that you can hardly lift your hands fight one more round. When your nose is bleeding and your eyes are black and you are so tired, fight one more round because we don’t know when success makes its appearance.

Never give-up, just persist and learn from your mistakes. People don’t fail because they are unlucky; they fail because they quit. Defeat is never final until you accept it. An unknown saying says: “Do not fear life as you do not fear the stars or the evening breeze. We are all here for a purpose and everything happens for a reason.” Challenge your fears and see if they are real or illusory. The opposite of fear is not courage but it is confidence. Our lives improve only when we take chances. The first and most difficult risk we can take is to be honest with ourselves. Honesty is the best policy. Unless you are honest, change would be impossible. Never mistake an opinion for a fact. Don’t live in the past and worry about the future.
