The Hitavada State Bureau,

An old Water Buffalo Bull was found dead at a field of Mainpur in Gariaband district on Saturday morning.  Farmer Ganesh Ram was taken aback after spotting the swollen carcass of water buffalo bull lying on his field, indicating that it was there since past couple of days. This field is close to Udanti-Sitanadi Tiger Reserve and adjacent to Beat-1041. Bull’s identity was established as Shyamu and he had a radio collar on his neck.

Since the rumour mill was already abuzz after the death of white tiger in Kanan-Pendari, people quickly pointed fingers at the alleged shortcomings on part of the Forest Department. People also recalled the incident of poaching of an 8-year-old tiger in the same area last year to back up their claims of foul play. Notably, two men were caught with the hide of poached tiger in this area this year.

However, Principal Chief Conservator of Forest (PCCF) Wildlife Koushalendra Singh rejected any foul play, saying the bull at 23-years was well past the average age of a water buffalo i.e. 20-years. Department’s veterinarian also didn’t find marks of injuries on the cadaver. Shyamu lived to the fullest and died of natural causes, PCCF asserted.
