Developmental works could not be carried out to meet the norms as the approval to master plan pending with CZA, says Maharajbag Zoo Controller

After appointing independent officer to look after zoo, the administration to appeal to Central Govt for restoration of recognition

A day after Central Zoo Authority (CZA) derecognised Maharajbag zoo administered by College of Agriculture under Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth, Maharajbag zoo authorities hit back at CZA over development plan of the zoo pending for approval with CZA.  According to Dr N D Parlawar, Zoo Controller and Associate Dean of College of Agriculture, most of the concerns expressed by CZA would have been addressed had CZA approved development plan expeditiously. Most of the development works relating to proper maintenance of the zoo could not be carried out by the zoo administration as the development plan got stuck.

Maharajbag zoo administration had forwarded a master plan for development of the zoo in 2011 seeking CZA approval to it. CZA suggested changes. Accordingly, the zoo administration submitted revised plan thrice to CZA, with the last such plan being submitted in 2016. “However, as the plan has not been approved so far, development works could not be started. We also submitted a lay-out plan for the zoo in February 2018. CZA had assured to approve the development plan during a hearing that was to be held in May in New Delhi. However, now this decision (of derecognition) has been taken,” stated Dr Parlawar in a statement circulated to media on Tuesday. Dr Parlawar stressed that College of Agriculture had been discharging its responsibilities very well as for 50 years as far as management and development of Maharajbag zoo was concerned.

“Dr Panjabrao Deshmukh Krishi Vidyapeeth is equipped to manage and develop the zoo using modern methods,” he added. Also, he stated that an independent officer would be appointed to look after Maharajbag zoo and that the administration would once again appeal to the Central Government for restoring recognition of the zoo. CZA had cancelled the recognition of Maharajbag zoo on Monday over the failure of the zoo administration to comply with the suggestions made by it. The derecognition of the historic 125-year-old zoo located in the heart of the city created quite a flutter. The letter sent by D N Singh, Member Secretary of CZA, to the zoo administration clearly mentioned that the CZA would not give ‘any further extension’ to the recognition to the zoo. It mentioned that the zoo administration did not undertake improvement works.

CZA had made suggestions for improvement of the zoo including upgrading the enclosures of wild animals, installing new cages, providing necessary facilities to visitors, improving veterinary aspect, closing the park for morning walk/yogasan for senior citizens, filling up vacant posts, separating children’s park from zoo area, constructing protection wall, banning use of plastic, appointing full-time zoologist and Education Officer, keeping records as per the provisions under the relevant rules, finding mates for single animals, etc.
