Business Bureau,

Amid hue and cry over rising levels of pollution in many metro cities, people in Nagpur seem to have been taking preventive steps, as they are planting more and more saplings to increase green cover. Moreover, corporate houses and private and public sector companies are also supporting the cause.

This is what the recent hike in demand of saplings and grass from individual and institutional buyers show. Currently, there is 15 to 20 per cent increase in demand for saplings and grass as compared to previous year.
“There is a healthy growth in demand for saplings compared to last year,” said Bharat Jajodia of Bharat Nursery while speaking to The Hitavada on Thursday.
“As people are becoming more aware, they wish to plant more trees. And thus they are showing interest in planting sapling wherever it is possible. There are individuals who are planting saplings in their backyards, lawns and gardens. Those living in flat schemes are doing it in their balconies and even on roof tops,” he said.

The season for buying plants begins from July and continues till December-January. “Of course there is an element of enhancing the aesthetic look of their house attached to it, now a days people are also showing concerns for the environment,” Jajodia said. Apart from this, many private and public sector companies are also doing satisfactory work in this regard as their requirement of saplings and grass has gone up considerably,” he said.

Another nursery owner Radheshyam Kherkar said that many institutions and organisations have started developing green areas in front of their offices and work places which is generating good demand for nursery products.

“People have become more concerned about environment and want to bring down the pollution level in the area surrounding them. This is the major reason for increase in demand of saplings,” he said. The most sought after saplings are of roses, ‘Shewanti’, Daisy, ‘Jaswand’, Royal Palm, cactus and garden grass among other varieties. Nagpur has become one of the main markets for saplings and it caters to the demand from far off places. Saplings are sent to other places like Raipur, Bilsapur, Ambikapur, Korba, Champa etc.

It is important to note that more than 50 large nurseries located in the city that are catering to the demand for saplings. Some of the most prominent nurseries located in different parts of the city are Paradise Nursery, Taj Nursery, Sanman Nursery, Vijay Nursery, Ashok Van, Lokesh Nursery, Anand Nursery, Kalambe Nursery and International Flori Farm, Mansar.

“One of the prominent markets for saplings is located at Ubadi village on Katol Road. There are more than 25 large and small nurseries located in the village,” said Manik Bhange, owner of Manik Lawns. The price range starts from Rs 20 per sapling and it goes up to Rs 1,500 per plant depending on the size and variety. “These nurseries deal in different types of plants including saplings of fruit and flower. Companies and institutions normally require lawn grass and plants for landscaping. They also buy teak and other forest plants in bulk quantity,” Bhange added.
