By T G L IYER,

G oals must be ambitious but within our reach. Everyday activities are not goals. A goal is something you really want but currently not experiencing. If you do not change anything in your life, you will not experience anything different. Make a list of the things you really want. This list should be divided into long-term and short-term. This list can contain big goals and should include goals in your official and private life. The goals should include Personal Development, hobbies sports and social activities. These goals can be tangible like acquiring money as well as health and fitness. Most people indulge in the luxury of goal thoughts like dreaming about winning a lottery or something like a football pool.

They say to themselves we shall buy a house, new car or go for a cruise. Instead of these what a man or woman really want is climbing up the ladder of life to reach some place reachable! If you are single, you don’t have to consult anyone but yourself. If you have a family, you can consult them because you are giving to acquire things and leave them behind. The goals you set must be your own and not borrowed from someone else or an expert. Also set deadlines and a time-frame to reach them.

The first thing to do is to giveup that are barriers obstructing your goals. Give-up things like gambling acquiring things which are of little use and acquiring things which raise the quality of life. There are so many good things that can be done like losing weight, becoming fitter or fixing a better look in shaping the God-given body. Most important is changing and improving the quality of thoughts.

The human mind is a powerful medium which can create miracles if we really want to enjoy life. My father used to say “Make a team and then make it happen. Take the first step and do not falter or hesitate. You are journeying from the known to the unknown. As soon as you step forward, you will have put into motion the process of change. You will never be the same person again because, you have taken action and a change has occurred! Remember, that if you fail to plan, you are planning to fail. Desire and motivation without planning and action is just day dreaming.

When you believe that you can achieve something, you give yourself a start moulding it!” Remember, that you can’t give-up at any stage; you have to persist and learn from your mistakes. People don’t fail because they are unlucky but they fail because they quit! Defeat is never final until you accept it. Believe that there is always a way to achieve what you want. We should be inspired in life by following heroes. Read the life history of those who have found success and achieved great things. You fail in life, only when you quit and you alone decide to continue or quit finally! We are the creators of our destiny and if take good steps, only a wonderful future will happen. We are the creators and destroyers of our destiny! Life is a journey of self-discovery. You will find as you look back upon life that the moments that stand out are the moments when you have done things for others.

Happiness, afterall, depends on the quality of thoughts you cultivate. In fact, you need not put-up a name plate or inscribe your name on marble because your deeds are etched in the minds of others. Even one person remembering you is good enough! When you reach an elevation all levels disappear. When you fly in an aircraft at forty thousand feet altitude, all hills and vales appear at the same level. Similarly, when you raise yourself all differences disappear and you become one! Look at example in history: Einstein achieved success because the ground work were already done. He had to only arrange the remaining pieces. Issac Newton had to create facts which was not readily available. Galileo was still greater because he had no facts at his disposal.

If Bill Gates was born in Africa he could not have become successful. If Amitabh Bachchan was a Doctor or Engineer, he could not have been successful. In fact, you can’t compare people when circumstances are different! Roger Bannister did not break a record; he only broke a limiting belief. Mahatma Gandhi integrated India into a whole country without breaking it into pieces and bits. We say that we are independent because of cohesion and a strong centre! Education is one admirable thing, but it is well to remember that nothing that is worth knowing can be taught. As knowledge expands, you discover new territories! When you love what you do you are alive. Do not rely on old yardsticks to measure new ventures!
