Business Bureau,

To protest against the merger of three public sector banks, the National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW) on Saturday said that it will observe nationwide strike on December 26.  The national level body claimed that several other bodies of bank employees and officers have also extended support to the protest and thus banks across the country will remain closed during the protest. NOBW took the decision at its two-day Central Executive Committee meeting that began here on Saturday.

Addressing a press conference held here on Saturday, Upendra Kumar, National General Secretary of NOBW, said the banking sector is passing through difficult times as many vital issues are unresolved. “For a quite long we are demanding the policy makers to consider our demands. But as they are paying no heed, we have now decided to observe strike,” he said.

The Government had recently announced amalgamation of three public sector lenders -- Bank of Baroda, Dena Bank and Vijaya Bank. But the NOBW is opposing it saying that it is not in the interest of the banks and it staff member. Interestingly, the amalgamation of the banks will create country’s second-largest public sector bank by assets and branches. Apart from this, the other demands of the body include - fixing the responsibility of non-performing assets of the full time directors of the banks; provision of punishment for the defaulters; and increase in the workforce among other demands.

National Organisation of Bank Workers is also demanding better security in the banks; old pension scheme for new recruits and hike in family pension. Earlier, the bank workers body had resorted to demonstrations across the country to protest against the Government’s decision to merge the three banks. The body is opposing the Central Government’s attempt to create six-seven large banks by merging most of the existing public sector banks.

Ramnath Kini, National President of NOBW; Archana Sowani, National Tresurer; Chandrakant Khonzode, All India Organising Secretary; Arvind Bhumralkar, National President of NOBW - SBI; Nitin Borwankar, Generl Secretry of Vidarbha Bank employees’ Federation; Suresh Choudhari, Media In-charge of NOBW; and others were also present on the occasion.
