Staff Reporter,

Believe in the motto “Service before self, like the Indian Army Does, if you have to excel in life. Lead a life that is simple, make it fruitful,” stated Lt Gen Ravindra Thodge PVSM AVSM SM VSM (Retd), while delivering his talk as part of the late Balasaheb Mahajan Smruti Vyakhan Mala which is held to mark his jayanti. Present on the occasion, besides Gen Thodge, were wife Manju Thodge, Air Vice-Marshal (Retd) Suryakant Chafekar Shaurya Chakra recipient, Col Sunil Deshpande VSM (Retd), wife Shama Deshpande, Capt Milind Hastak, Flt Lt (Retd) Shiwalee Deshpande, Anil Mahajan, Sneha Mahajan, Adv Sontakke, teachers and staff of CP & Berar Institution, Principal of Prahar Military School Shubha Mohogaonkar.

Veering off from usual speech giving, Gen. Thodge took advantage of huge gathering in which there were many youngsters, NCC cadets and Praharis fully tuned to what was being said. Gen Thodge belongs to Gorkha Rifles and had many interesting anecdotes and examples to give to enlighten on the functioning of battalion in Indian Army. Gen Thodge spoke about Leadership versus Management and said, “management is about persuading people doing things they do not want to do, while leadership is inspiring people to do things they never thought they could do”. The latter is more relevant in the Indian Forces.

He appreciated Prahar Samaj Jagruti’s work and said that for leaders, most important factor is self inspiration, self motivation, courage to decide and act, initiative to be self starter. He spoke on Naam, Namak, Nishan, Vachan, courage, integrity, selflessness, self discipline and taking pride in one’s profession. He lamented that good deeds however small they may be, go unappreciated, while an equally small and illrelevant incident connected with a derailed Army man, gets splashed in social media as if Armymen indulge in killing spree. He spoke of how an officer has to take a call on important decisions fearlessly after giving it a careful thought since his men in the battalion are watching him all the while as their leader. He appealed to the teachers and parents to be a proud parent to imbibe values in the children. Gen Thodge gave many interesting real life examples of how lucky he has been to be alive to speak before this august gathering, and how his decisions, at times, were taken with firm conviction, knowing that his job will be at stake, if things went wrong.

Earlier, Gen. Thodge was felicitated and welcomed with a shawl, shrifal, a memento and a gift by Col Sunil Deshpande, while Manju Thodge was welcomed by Shama Deshpande. The dignitaries laid a wreath at the Amar Jawan memorial erected in the hall. Flt Lt Shiwalee Deshpande welcomed and introduced the distinguished Guests and also proposed the vote of thanks. Praharis also rendered a patriotic song that rebuked Pakistan.
