INDIA’S foreign policy, reshaped by the Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, has received a thumbs up from an unexpected quarter, a Chinese diplomat. Mr. Rong Ying, Vice-President of China Institute of International Studies, a think-tank affiliated to Chinese Foreign Ministry has acknowledged that India’s diplomacy has become vibrant and assertive under Mr. Modi. Such accolades coming from a Chinese expert are rare and hence significant. His remarks should silence the critics of the change in foreign policy adopted by the NDA Government. Mr. Ying has particularly mentioned about boosting of India’s ties with the US and Japan while asserting that India-China ties have also developed and maintained a ‘steady momentum’. Mr. Ying’s remarks are important because they have come after the nearly 70-day stand-off between the two countries over Doka La issue, which forced China to take back its forces from the disputed area. There is no denying the fact that India’s stature in the world has increased under Mr. Modi, which is a big achievement.

TIMELY HELP

SANCTIONING of Rs. 370 crore to the Border Security Force (BSF) and the Indo Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) for construction of bunkers and climate-controlled huts is timely. There have been massive ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the Line of Control for the past one year, which has claimed several lives. Since Pakistani forces are targeting civilians increasingly, it has become necessary to construct bunkers for them also. Similarly, the ITBP is guarding lengthy border with China in mountainous region, where temperature dips to minus 40 degree Celsius. It is extremely difficult to patrol the area on foot under harsh conditions. Procurement of snow-scooters for the ITBP jawans had therefore become a priority. Defence Minister Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman recently visited forward posts to boost morale of the forces and to get first hand information about the needs of the jawans. Rs. 370 crore have been sanctioned immediately after her visit. The promptness with which the funds have been sanctioned for the forces is worth appreciating.
