Special Correspondent,

Metro Rail to be extended upto Kanhan, Butibori, Wadi and Hingna town

This may be a major boost to the public transport in Nagpur district, as Maharashtra Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MMRCL) has proposed to increase the present Metro Rail Network upto 51 kms outside the orange city. This will definitely increase the ridership of the Nagpur Metro by over 6 lakhs.

MMRCL will organise a meeting with stakeholders at Hotel Centre Point on February 3 at 2 pm to roll out phase-II plan of Nagpur Metro Rail. Presently, MMRCL is laying rail network of 39 kms in the city. The addition of new rail network will increase it upto 90 kms. As per plans, the present rail network will be extended from Automotive to Kanhan bridge upto 13 kms while it will be increased by six kms from Lokmanya Nagar to Hingna Town. The other extension of rail network will be of 5 kms from Vasudeo Nagar to Wadi, Khapri to Indorama Company upto Butibori by including this 17 km stretch and Prajapati Nagar to Kapsi which will add another 5 km to metro route. This will increase the estimate cost of the project by Rs 10,000 crore. The present cost of the project is around Rs 8,500 crore.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Union Minister for Road, Transport, Shipping Nitin Gadkari are emphasizing on connecting rural areas by rail network. Every day, hundreds of passengers are coming from different means of transport to Nagpur for their jobs and other work.

The city bus services, auto rickshawas, and other vehicles are illegally carrying thousands of commuters from these areas to the city daily adding to traffic and creating parking problem. The laying of Metro Rail will be beneficial for commuters as it would be economically viable.

The MMRCL is planning to construct station at the distance of every one km. However, the number of stations will be less on Butibori to Khapri rail network. The Metro Rail will take diversion from Hingna T point towards Wadi. It can seek permission to use Ordinance Factory land for laying rail network. Dr Brijesh Dixit, Managing Director of MMRCL is working hard for the project to extend it upto rural areas to increase the ridership of the Maha Metro rail.
