THE idea of ‘perfect womanhood is perfect independence’ - Swami Vivek-anand, while making this observation, had also underlined a huge challenge for the nation. How-so-ever high have been Indian society’s notion of ‘perfect womanhood’, women - to this day - are bereft of perfect independence. Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi, while eulogising women’s contribution in nation building in his ‘Mann ki Baat’, has once again touched this still-to-be-fully-recognised aspect of women empowerment. Greater participation would need greater independence, greater acceptance and greater spirit of accommodation. Unfortunately, some very crucial areas where women’s participation is more than necessary (in view of every increasing graph of crime against women), are still woefully short of them. While concerns for women’s security weighs heavy on nation’s mind, just 7.28 women in police force speaks volumes about the enthusiasm in their participation. It is high time, our notions got a reality check and addressed the needs of the nation.
