The garbage dumping landfill site Bhanpur Khanti spread in 47 acre land, which has now been closed by Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) and the process of its scientific closure now underway, was visited on Saturday by the Bhopal Divisional Commissioner Ajatshatru Shrivastav, Collector Sudam Khade, IG Bhopal Jaideep Prasad, Mayor Alok Sharma and Commissioner of the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC) Priyanka Das.The recent fire incident in the piles of garbage at two dozen spots where the smoke had enveloped a major portion of the city had alarmed the officials.

The Khanti will now have two watch towers where guards will be deployed to keep an eye on the movement of anti-social elements, who are supposed to have lit the garbage, which caused the fire. A Kolkata-based team was also roped in to detect the presence of methane gas inside the waste, which will be neutralised with the required technique. Pipeline laying work has also been started to release methane gas from the piles of garbage.

Notably, the Khanti had caught fire six days back, which had led to smoke billowing all around from the heaps of garbage. Fire fighters of BMC are still trying to get complete control over the fire inside garbage heaps. An FIR has also been lodged by the civic body officials at Chhola Mandir police station. Environmentalists had termed it a move to destroy the waste so that the cost incurred in its scientific closure could be usurped. However, an inquiry was ordered by the Commissioner into the incident, while the company assigned the task of its scientific closure was also served a notice for it.
