NMC to give free ownership rights to slum-dwellers

Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) will give ownership rights to slum dwellers of Rambag, Borkar Nagar, Bansod Mohalla, Gujar Nagar, Mehtarpura, Sudarshan Nagar, Takia Dhantoli, Saraswati Nagar. The Maharashtra Government has issued directions to the local body to provide ownership rights to them without any charges but they have to pay the prevailing stamp duty for the same.

The decision was taken in the general body meet of NMC. The civic body will recover service charges of Rs 50 per month for the residential hut upto 225 sq fts and Rs 150 per month from non-residential users for use upto 225 sq ft. The joint users will have to pay Rs 100 for 225 sq ft use. The government has directed local body to provide the ownership rights to SC, ST, Backward and other backward class people without any charge.

BJP corporator Dharampal Meshram has demanded to provide houses without levying any stamp duty to them. He said, the ready reckoner rates are very high in these localities and slum dwellers may not be able to afford to pay the stamp duty charges as this may cost in lakhs. He said, the government should give special concession to the slum dwellers and waive the stamp duty.

The local body will conduct plain table survey and socio-economic survey of the slum dwellers. They have to fill the
rent agreement with the civic body, this was informed by D D Jambhulkar, Executive Engineer.
