Overwhelming response to Morna river cleanliness drive

The fifth phase of Morna river cleanliness drive received overwhelming response from people on Saturday morning as hundreds of volunteers of social organisations and citizens joined in to clean up the jalkhumbhi and other weeds from riverbed.

Mission Morna planned and implemented by Collector Aastik Kumar Pandey entered fifth week on Saturday. Nimwadi and Luxury Bus stand parts of the river were chosen for cleaning up when the drive began at 8 am. Collector Aastik Kumar Pandey, SDO Sanjay Khadse, RDC Shrikant Deshpande, CEO S Ramamurti, Akola MC Commissioner Jitendra Wagh, Additional CEO Subhash Pawar, Additional Akola MC Commissioner Dilip Patil, Tehsildar Rahul Tayade, Rameshwar Puri, former civic chief Harish Alimchandani, Zilla Patrakar Sangh Chief Shoukat Ali Mirsaheb and others actively took part in the drive.

Two thousand citizens including policemen, Government employees, members of self help groups, Sant Gadgebaba Rescue Team from Pinjar, Sant Gagdebaba Swachchta Abhiyan, Murtijapur, Prabuddha Bharat Sanstha, Police Patil Sanghtana, Vidarbha Patwari Sangh, Jijau Brigade, Sankalp Pratisthan, NSS volunteers and NCC cadets took out the weeds and other dirt from the riverbed for more than two hours. Celebration of SDO Sanjay Khadse’s birthday at the bank of river was attraction of today’s drive. After the drive all the participants celebrated his birthday.

Meanwhile, Sanjay Dhotre, MP; Gowardhan Sharma, MLA; and Randhir Sawarkar, MLA; have announced a fund Rs 15 lakh each from their local development fund for the development of river Morna. Former minister Babsaheb Dhabekar has also announced Rs 1 lakh aid for the drive. Pandey said that the funds will be utilised for beautification project.
