Opposing increased parking charges at Habibganj Railway Station, on Monday, Congress workers burnt the effigy of Railway Minister Piyush Goel and threatened to start ‘Rail Roko Andolan’ from March 1.

Congress workers also submitted memorandum to the railway officials and demanded to reduce the rate within month. According to Congress Corporator Guddu Chauhan, “Railway is trying to privatise the entire station and general public is suffering for the same. Instead of facilitating the people, railway is robbing on name of parking. One can own a rented house on monthly parking charges of Habibganj Railway Station. If parking charges would not be reduced within a month, Congress party would start Rail Roko Andolan across State.” He further said earlier people were parking their vehicles for Rs 40 or 50 per month but now they have to pay Rs 1,000 or above which is injustice.

Guddu Chauhan said that Railway Minister, Divisional Railway Manager (DRM) and District Collector all are responsible for this higher fare and they need to address the issue immediately.

However, railway officials said that the station is being redeveloped by the private contractor and they are handling the entire station, including parking slots. However, two days back, contractor had slashed the parking charges but passengers claimed that the parking charges are still 10 times higher. The contractor carrying out revamp work at the station introduced monthly pass of Rs 16,000 for four-wheelers and Rs 5,000 for the two-wheelers vehicle at Habibganj parking slot. Irked with the higher charges, passengers filed several complaints and after that railway board probed the matter. When Railway Board intervened and asked contractor to slash the price, it has been reduced as Rs 995 for two wheelers and Rs 5,990 for the four-wheelers vehicles.

According to passengers, before starting this station redevelopment project monthly parking charges were Rs 120 and Rs 300 for two-wheelers and four-wheelers respectively. “I am resident of Vidisha and works in Bhopal so I commute every day. Earlier, we were parking our vehicles at Habibganj Railway station for Rs 50 per month but now we have to pay Rs 5,000 which is almost impossible. I would prefer to get a rented house instead of parking slot for Rs 5000 per month” said Shubham Gupta. The new parking rate released by IRSDC is Rs 5 for cycle for 6 to 24 hours while old price was Rs 2 per day. New price for bike is Rs 15, Rs 20 and Rs 995 for two wheelers up to 12 hours, 24 hours and monthly respectively. For four-wheeler parking prices are Rs 40, Rs 50 and Rs 5,999 for 12 hours, 48 hours and monthly respectively.
