Accused in Khapa leopard electrocution held from MP

A team of forestmen arrested Waman Jogi (60), an accused in electrouction of a leopard at Tekadi village in Khapa Forest Range, from Mogra village in Chhindwara district in Madya Pradesh and him to Khapa within 24 hours of the incident coming to light.

It may be mentioned here that the leopard of 4/5 years age died due to electrocution as Jogi is said to have fixed a live wire to the fence around his farm. The leopard was electrocuted three/four days ago but the patrolling team of Forest Department noticed the decomposed carcass on Monday. The accused dragged the body to 400 metres away but the sniffer dog located the exact spot at the fencing where the beast died.

Pravin Naik, Range Forest Officer, Khapa, said that forestmen enquired about whereabouts of Jogi and accordingly raided his house at Mogra in Chhindwara district and arrested him on Tujesday. Naik interrogated the accused but he failed to admit saying that it is the work of outsiders. However, the investigation officer is not satisfied with his answers and conducting in-depth enquiry into the matter. Forestmen will produce Jogi before Judicial Magistrate First Class at Saoner on Wednesday to seek Forest Custody Remand.

Jogi was cultivating his piece of land at Tekadi as well adjoining land belonging to a person hailing from Madhya Pradesh on contract basis. Further investigation is underway. The team that went to Mogra village consisted of Naik, Lahanu Thokar, Range Forest Officer (Mobile Squad), S K Rangari, Y M Rewatkar, both Round Officers, U G Sonkusre and Pravin Bagde, both Forest Guards.
