THERE are very few sportspersons who stand up to the challenges that ageing thrusts upon them. Leander Paes is among that rare breed of players, who revel in adversities and pin down forces for mesmerising outcomes. Even at the wrong side of 40s, Paes stands up as a worthy competitor always wearing his passion on sleeves. The old warhorse is back to serve the country in next month’s Davis Cup tie against China. And as has been the recent trend a controversy has followed Paes’ inclusion in the squad by AITA. The “reservation” comes from Rohan Bopanna, another big star in Indian tennis. That the two do not go along well has been well documented but Bopanna’s reluctance to pair with Paes is totally unwarranted. No personal acrimony should take precedence when it comes to playing for the tri-colour. Non-playing captain Mahesh Bhupathi can vouch for that when he and Paes won awesome victories despite their personal differences. Davis Cup is a matter of country’s prestige. Bopanna would do well to team up with Paes, who is still a big force.
