TWO things have come in sharp focus on the issue of data storage by various social platforms like Facebook and the pertinent query raised by the Supreme Court with the Union Government on Aadhaar. In the first instance lately there have been allegations of social media like Facebook using stored data for influencing the nation’s electoral process and was issued strict warning by IT and Law Minister Mr. Ravi Shankar Prasad. The second came from the Supreme Court when the five-judge Constitution Bench questioned the necessity of storing the entire personal data under the Aadhaar scheme. The Supreme Court has asked if the goal is identification of citizens why should not less invasive methods be used for the purpose instead of aggregating and centralising personal data. There is apprehension in public mind that by linking every personal detail with Aadhaar the Centre was making citizens vulnerable to its misuse by unscrupulous elements. The warning by the Indian Government to social media Facebook comes in the light of this apprehension.

THE Home Ministry’s communication to the Parliamentary panel that Pakistani intelligence agency Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) was training Sikh youths to spread terror across the country makes it clear that Pakistan is vigorously pursuing its agenda of destabilisation of Indian nation by using various means. Apart from using its own people for causing disturbances in India, Pakistan is always on the look out for disgruntled elements within India like the Khalistani group or the secessionists organisations in the North-East to cause disturbances in various parts of the country. For all practical purposes the Khalistan movement has been crushed long back. But Pakistan is trying to regroup and activate elements belonging to this secessionist group based in various other countries to revive the separatist movement in Punjab. But these efforts will have no bearing on the country’s internal security as the Indian security forces are well aware, vigilant and prepared to meet any such dirty games by rogue organisations like the ISI.
