THE verdict from the North-East of the country is loud and clear. Notwithstanding some of the hiccups that the Modi Government had to make do with in the form of the PNB scandal and some other minor issues, every region of the nation is willing to give a very long rope to bring about changes in governance and the Government that will be beneficial to the country at large. Thus, whatever the efforts of the Opposition parties to put the Modi Government on the mat on issues and non-issues, the popular perception about the Bharatiya Janata Party-led National Democratic Alliance Government remains the only hope for the masses in every corner of the country. That the BJP and its allies together rule 21 States out of the 30 across the country shows the expanding footprint of the party and wholehearted acceptance by the people.
Having established itself in the North-East for the first time, which is a historic achievement for the party, the BJP now has quite justifiably set its eyes on Karnataka, one of the very important States in South, which sends 21 MPs to the Lok Sabha. Thus, the BJP leadership under Prime Minister Mr. Narendra Modi and party President Mr. Amit Shah has plans well laid down for the next year’s general elections. Though the North-East sends only five MPs, its significance for the national mood is of far greater importance than the numbers. The North-East victory has certainly set the tone for the party’s onward march.

It is not the question of ruthless decimation of the Opposition in an electoral battle; it is the people’s wish that is being manifested through election after election in the last four years wherever Assembly polls have been held. And there is no ambiguity in the verdict of the people. More than the political parties of all hues and colours, it is the people who have the clear vision of what they want their rulers to do for them and hence they are willing to give unmitigated, undiluted mandate to a party that has been promising good, corruption-free, public-oriented governance. And by acting promptly against the PNB scamsters the Government has sent out a clear message that however high and mighty, the guilty will not be spared. Such an assurance from the ruling parties in the past was missing altogether.

The Bharatiya Janata Party has been given a historic opportunity by the people of the country by handing over undiluted authority to put in place its plans for achieving what Prime Minister Mr. Narendra says, “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas.” That is the unfinished agenda the responsibility for fulfilling which has been cast by the people on the party. And it has to remain ever alert to these aspirations of the last man on the social ladder. Because implicit in the “Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas” is the assurance of welfare of every man in the society. This also points to the need to pursue the path of the development that is inclusive and all encompassing, as the Prime Minister has been promising.

This overwhelming verdict for the BJP all over the country, which is unprecedented in its sweep in the last few decades, also signals the total rejection of all other parties by the people. The message is very clear. While criticising the present Government, the Opposition has not offered any viable alternative policy framework. The people are disillusioned with the Opposition, especially the Congress which enjoyed several decades of power but has not done much to achieve the progress of the people. Instead in those decades of directionless rule, corruption, red-tape, misgovernance, policy paralysis got deeply entrenched, serving only the vested interests. The BJP leadership has to learn lessons from the blunders committed by their predecessors and chart out a course that will bury those ills fathoms deep. That is what the verdict is all about.
