Gold, cigarettes, saffron seized at Nagpur airport

A special team of the Customs Department seized gold, imported cigarettes and saffron being allegedly smuggled into the country by three passengers travelling in Air Arabia’s flight on Friday. The passengers were coming to the city from Dubai.

As per the Customs Department officials, there were two male passengers and one female passenger travelling in the flight. The officials detained the passengers at the airport and on searching their belongings found the materials. Apart from the Customs Department officials, senior officers attached to the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) were also involved in the drive. DRI is the apex anti-smuggling agency of India, working under the Central Board of Excise & Customs, Ministry of Finance, Government of India. All the officials were closely monitoring movements of all passengers traveling in the flight. The officials had gathered at the Dr Babasaheb Ambedkar International Airport in the city at about 3 am.

Acting on information received from reliable sources, the team seized 420 grams gold worth Rs 11.78 lakh, 500 carton of imported cigarettes worth Rs 10 lakh and significant quantity of saffron worth more than Rs 9.68 lakh from the passengers.Two of the passengers are from Wardha while one is from Mumbai. Sources said that the Customs Department officials conducted searches at the residences of these passengers.

Though the Customs Department officials released the passengers soon after recording their statements, sources said the officials would call them again for further investigation.
It is important to note that imported cigarettes and saffron enjoy good demand in local markets and thus anti-social elements make attempts to smuggle it.
