Major fire in Central Jail, no casualties

More than ten fire tenders were pressed into service to douse the flames

A HUGE QUANTITY of old gunny bags, broken furniture, buckets, scrap and other discarded goods were reduced to ashes after fire broke out in a godown situated in Central Jail premises here on Monday afternoon.
Though no casualty was reported, the exact cause behind the fire could not be ascertained so far.


A team of firefighters from Fire & Emergency Services of Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) led by Chief Fire Officer Rajendra Uchke rushed to the spot soon after getting information about the incident. Dharmaraj Nakod, In-charge of Narendra Nagar Fire Station, also rushed to the jail. More than ten fire tenders were pressed into service. As fire tenders could not enter into the jail premises, firefighters started the firefighting operation from outside the prison wall using ladders.


Besides jail officials, including Superintendent Rani Bhosle, and staff from Dhantoli Police also visited the spot .
After combating with the inferno for more than eight hours, the firefighters doused the flames.


The fire incident reduced the godown to a heap of smouldering broken wooden furniture, condemned goods and other scrap material. Chief Fire Officer Uchke told ‘The Hitavada’ that the cause behind the fire could not be known so far.
Jail Superintendent Rani Bhosle informed that Dhantoli Police as well as jail administration are conducting investigation to find out the exact cause of fire.
