Many left homeless as fire breaks out in slum cluster

A major fire broke out in the slum area of Shakti Nagar near Alkapuri gate no 1 under ward no 57 on Monday afternoon, covering the entire area in dark smog. There are no reports of anybody being injured so far in the blaze. Fire tenders from BMC and BHEL were rushed to the spot. The fire has been doused completely after two hours. The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.Most of the people who lived in this area worked as daily-wage labourers, who claim to have stored all their income inside their houses, which have now been burnt down. Entire dwellers commented, “Children’s school bags, medicines, grocery items, electronic items, and other household items turned into ashes and we lost everything in fire. Now we have to start life from zero. Somehow, we were managing the family affairs.” Nearly 60 slums were gutted in fire flared up at Shakti Nagar-Saket Nagar under ward no-57 rendering many families homeless. No casualty has been reported. People tried to their best to douse the fire to protect the household items but their effort went in vain as they could not protect their house hold items. Exact reason behind fire is still not known but it was said that the fire broke out in a shanty while a man was cooking food and soon the fire spread and engulfed nearby slums. However, a few domestic LPG cylinders which blew off in fire, posed problems in dousing the fire to fire fighters. Fire tender from the Bhopal Municipal Corporation (BMC), police, BHEL also were pressed into job. SDM Ravi Kumar said, “Reason behind fire is still not known. Survey of losses and damages will be conducted on Tuesday. Today, entire force and machinery was engaged in dousing the fire. Immediately, everything cannot be done. Fire fighters were pressed into job to douse the fire. Arrangement has been made at community hall of BMC for the affected families.”Local Corporator Rashmi Dwivedi said, “The people whose houses have been gutted, will be allowed to stay in the community hall nearby. Arrangement has been made for their stay in communities’ hall. Even assistance will provide for the shelter by BMC administration.” SDOP of Misrod Vijay Punj and other police personnel rushed there to assist the administration.
