CHHATTISGARH Bachao Andolan hosted day-long seminar on ‘Commercial Mining and Energy Policy as well as Impact and Challenges’ at Vrindavan Hall (Civil Lines) here. Former Union Minister Arvind Netam, Somiya Dutta (Energy coal expert) and Priyanshu Gupta (Coal researcher) delivered key lecturers at the occasion.Speaking at the occasion Arvind Netam said that Central Government has recently permitted mining for commercial sale by private companies with the objective to privatize the entire coal sector, potentially benefitting a few corporate houses. Somiya Dutta (Energy Coal Expert) alleged that now privatecompanies can now profit from selling coal in national and international markets without any constraints or questions from the government.
With this policy, the Government has demonstrated its blatant disregard for considerations of country’s industrial and socio-economic development, conservation of scarce national mineral resources, protection of bio-diversity rich forests, or people’s constitutional and legal rights. It seems as if the sole purpose of the Government is to benefit a few corporate groups.

Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan State Coordinator Alok Shukla that it’s important to note that only in January 2018, Coal India Limited had published a report titled ‘Coal Vision – 2030’, according to which no new coal mine allocation was needed beyond the current pipeline, in order to meet the energy requirements of India till 2030. The report also highlights that fall in prices of renewable energy and increased energy efficiency could further lower the coal demand, putting even the already allotted coal mines at considerable financial risk. Perhaps sensing this, the private coal companies had largely stayed away from 3rd – 5th tranche of coal block auctions leading to wide-scale cancellation of the auctions process, said Shukla. Present during the function were Anand Mishra and members of Chhattisgarh Bachao Andolan.
