Defence cos ready to show technologies in Defexpo 18

Modi to inaugurate the event on April 12


FROM tank manufacturers to shipbuilding companies, assault rifle developers to aircraft giants, all are eying to attract Indian defence market during the 10th edition of Defexpo 18 which will commence from April 11 at temple complex in Kanchipuram district, south of Chennai on the East Coast Road. Total 705 defence manufacturers from 23 different countries are registered for this four-day International event.


Being the largest weapons importer in the world, the event innovatively named Defexpo India – generates significant interest from around the world.
Traditionally held in the national capital, where it is easiest for Government officials to attend, the event was moved to Goa in 2016, when Manohar Parrikar was the Defence Minister. This time around, the event has found its way to Kanchipuram district in current Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman’s home State of TN.


The event is usually held during February-March, however, this time, the mystery over the dates remained till December. Late confirmation of dates affected the number of participants than previous event. Total 558 Indian firms are participating which is the highest ever in the history of Defexpo. Reliance Defence, Kalyani Group, Mahindra, Tata, Ashok Leyland, HAL, DRDO, Ordnance Factory Board, BHML, MUKUT etc. are the defence giants who will display their products.


Foreign companies like Lockheed Martin, Israel Aerospace Industry Ltd, Rafael, Boeing, Airbus, Caterpillar Inc., Saab etc are participating in this event. Countries like Russia, Israel, USA, UK and France have their separate pavilions that will exhibit different weapons, security systems, warheads etc.


On April 11, the show will start for business visitors along with live demonstration by Land Systems and flying display by Aero Systems in presence of Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman. After the demos, Defence Minister will address the media. She will also host a reception dinner to business visitors.


The formal inauguration will take place on April 12 at the hands of PM Narendra Modi. Live demos will take place after the formal inauguration programme. On April 13, around 100 Russian and Indian companies will participate in the Indo-Russia Military Industry Conference. Naval warship visit for public at Chennai Harbor will be the major attraction of the day. The last day will remain open for public and live demo will also take place. Light Combat Helicopter, HAL Dhruv, Dhanush Artillery Gun, Arjun Mk-II, Bhishma Tank and others are major attractions of the event.
