Nagpur’s Pride: IG V D Chafekar at helm of Coast Guard Region West

In a development that makes every Nagpurian proud, Inspector General (IG) Vijay Chafekar has taken over the helm of Coast Guard Region (West). He took over the charge of the office from IG K R Nautiyal, who is proceeding to Vizag as Coast Guard Commander Eastern Sea Board. IG Nautiyal has been promoted to the rank of Additional Director General.
IG Vijay D Chafekar studied in New English High School and Mohota Science College in Nagpur before moving to Naval Staff College, USA. During his illustrious career spanning more than three decades, IG Chafekar was decorated with the highest awards for act of bravery in the Indian Coast Guard.
In 2016, President’s Tatrakshak Medal was awarded to him. Earlier in 2012, he was honoured with Tatrakshak Medal.


IG Chafekar has taken over the helm of the Coast Guard Region (West), which comprises an area that extends to the outer limit of Exclusive Economic Zone from the coast of Maharashtra, Goa, Karnatata, Kerala, Daman & Diu, and the Lakshadweep Islands. Previously, the Flag Officer was Deputy Director (Policy and Plans) at the Coast Guard Headquarters, New Delhi.


The Flag Officer holds an M.Phil degree in Defence and Strategic Studies, apart from MSc and PG Diploma in Maritime Law. The Officer is an alumnus of the prestigious Joint Services Staff College, New Port, USA.


During his illustrious career, the Officer has commanded all classes of Coast Guard Ships and Air Squadrons at Kolkata, Chennai, and Daman. In 2009, in a unique honour, he was appointed to commission ‘Samrat’, the largest of the Coast Guard advanced off-shore patrol vessels. The Flag Officer’s staff appointments include Commander District Headquarters, Chennai and Kochi, and a stint in the Bureau of Naviks.
