Nagpur’s marriage counsellors best in State’s family courts

In cities like Mumbai, Pune and Thane, the percentage cases settled by granting divorce is high

The work of family consellors from Nagpur Family Court was highly appreciated during meeting of Association of Marriage Counsellors of Maharashtra and Co-ordination Committee of Judges, held at Pune recently.

The statistics pertaining to settlement of cases by 12 family courts in the state was also released. The achievements of Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Nagpur, Aurangabad attract more attention as they are old ones. The family courts in Akola, Amravati, Kolhapur, Latur, Nanded, Nashik and Solapur have been established recently.

The statistics also indicates difference between trend in metro cities like Mumbai, Pune and Thane, where reconciliation is lesser. Nagpur was appreciated for better achievement on this count. Aurangabad tops in reconciliation, the cause is related to higher share of minorities in the population.

Aurangabad Family Court could achieve reconciliation of 16.74% of cases received by it. Nagpur is next to Aurangabad with reconciliation in 7.86% cases. In cities like Mumbai, Pune and Thane the percentage cases settled by granting divorce is high. The percentage on this count in Mumbai 55.16%, Pune 40.95% and Thane 42.59%. The divorce granted in Nagpur is at 27.22%.

Senior most Counsellor in Nagpur Dr Shekhar Pande said that the social scientists are required to carry out research for the reasons for this difference between metro, semi-metro and rural cases, so far as divorce is concerned.
Dr Pande said that in Mumbai, Pune and Thane most of the divorce cases are settled with mutual consent. This also reflects on changing value system, changing priorities of young ones on family issues.

Besides research on causes and changing priorities, in-depth study on existing law also need careful study. The laws were framed originally to protect women from being exploited. However, as cases of women misusing the law in their favour are increasing, law also needs review.
Nagpur Counsellors have also achieved distinction of in resolving issues of alimony, custody of children, streedhan, gold and other ornaments.
The statistics is based on number of cases handled from January 2013 to December 2018.
