Special Correspondent,

GANGSTER Santosh Ambekar wanted by City Police in the sensational Balya alias Ravindra Gawande murder case finally surrendered before Court No 3 in Nyay Mandir premises on Thursday. As per the court order, Ambekar was sent to Central Jail. A senior official from Crime Branch told ‘The Hitavada’ that Kalamna Police would obtain production warrant of Ambekar. Police would produce him before the court and seek remand for his custodial interrogation.

A separate chargesheet would be filed against him as per the court’s order after investigation. Ambekar was earlier booked under the stringent Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) for four times and was absconding after the sensational murder of his arch rival Balya Gawande. The court had acquitted all 10 other accused in the case as the charges could not be substantiated against them but Ambekar’s trial was pending.

Dreaded goon Gawande was brutally done done to death in Kalamna area on January 22 last year. He was stabbed 68 times.

Believing it to be a case of contract killing, an offence of criminal conspiracy, murder and destruction of evidence was registered against 11 persons, including Ambekar, at Kalamna Police Station. While acquitting 10 other accused in the case, the court had pointed out several loopholes in the police investigation. Even there was no mention of the place from where the clothes and weapons were seized by the police after the murder.

There were no eye-witnesses and the case was purely on circumstantial evidence to justify the conspiracy theory. Even Gawande’s wife and daughter turned had hostile. Several non-bailable warrants were issued against Ambekar and was also declared as a ‘proclaimed absconder’ but police had virtually failed to nab him. When Ambekar surrendered before the court, many of his supporters were present in Nyay Mandir premises.
