Cricket betting racket busted in Bhandara, 16 bookies arrested

In one of the biggest cricket betting unearthed in recent times, Nagpur Rural Police busted a full-fledged cricket-betting racket in Bhandara without intimating officials of Bhandara Police and arrested 16 bookies for accepting bets on ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) matches.
With such a big racket operating in the city unabated, role of senior officials of Bhandara Police has come under the scanner.


Sources informed ‘The Hitavada’ that Director General of Police (DG) Law and Order (L&O), Bipin Bihari directed the Rural Police for the raid. Superintendent of Police (SP) Shailesh Balkawade constituted three special teams for the action, on Friday night.


The police teams raided a house of Premdas Mohan Rangari (62) at Mhada Colony in Bhandara. The racket was operated from the first floor. The accused were accepting bets on Indian Premier League (IPC) cricket match between Royal Challengers Bangalore Vs Kings XI Punjab, informed police.
The raiding party was stumbled upon high end gadgets being used to run the racket. The cops seized Rs 1.04 lakh cash, line computer machines, laptops, television sets, 230 cellphones, air-conditioner, four cars collectively worth Rs 27 lakh from the spot. The accused have been booked under Sections 420, 467, 468 and 471 of the Indian Penal Code read with Sub-sections 4, 5 of Maharashtra Gambling Act. Under the guidance of SP Shailesh Balkawade, the arrest was made by DySP Sanjay Purandare, API Pravin Wange, PSI Narendra Wankhede, Laxmiprasad Dubey, Jaiprakash Sharma, Rajendra Sanodia, Suraj Parmar, Baba Keche, Nilesh Barwe, Nana Raut, Vijay Dongre, Amol Wagh, Pranay Banafar, Kishor Dekate, Amit Mehre, Shrikant Pandhre and Kartik Puri.

The accused
The accused are identified as Sheikh Amjad Sheikh Ramjan (32), a resident of Shanti Nagar, Itwari; Raju Satyanarayan Agrawal (43), a resident of NIT Complex, Pardi Square; Pravin Karanlal Gupta (40), a resident of Plot No. 18, Bhavani Nagar, Pardi; Aman Kishor Kapoor (31), a resident of Kumbharpura, Pothi Galli, Itwari; Vivek Anand Jaiswal (26), a resident near Chhoti Masjid, Sadar; Kuldipsingh Jagirasingh Gittal (35), a resident of Bab Deep Nagar; Gopal Bhaiyyaji Kadu (26), a resident of Kamgar Nagar, Nari Road; Pramod Bhaurao Dongre (45), a resident of Mahalaxmi Nagar, Lane No. 2, Manewada Road; Rahul Surendra Jain (36), a resident of Bapurao Galli, near Nikalas Mandir, Itwari; Gajju Madanlal Agrawal (37), a resident of Netaji Nagar, Kalamna Road; Arjun Amardipsingh Rajput (28), a resident of Mohd Rafi Square, Ekta Colony, Yashodhara Nagar; Manoj Gurumukh Alwani (32), a resident of Plot No. 289, Wanshasa Mandir, Jaripatka; Ashish Rajesh Chourasiya (27), a resident of Mangalwari Road, Kanji House Square; Lalchandra Atmaram Indanani (46), a resident of Sant Kripa Niwas, Jaripatka; Laxman Gopaldas Harchandani (46), a resident of Plot No 202, Ritesh Palace, Ring Road, Jaripatka, Firoz Badruddin Maidani (50), a resident of Laxmibai Ward, Gondia and house-owner Premdas Mohan Rangari (62), Mhada Colony, Bhandara.

Bhandara, a ‘safe heaven’ for cricket bookies
Sources informed ‘The Hitavada’ that Bhandara was become a ‘safe heaven’ for cricket bookies for last two years. Bookies from Nagpur, Raipur, Gondia and other cities have established their base in the city.
After receiving intelligence report about the illegal rackets, DG L&O asked the Nagpur Rural Police to conduct raid at a spot under jurisdiction of Bhandara police and expose the nexus.
