Nagpur Municipal Corporation (NMC) has razed 154 illegal constructions out of total 691 to release parking spaces in all 10 zones of Orange city. The action was taken following an ultimatum issued by Nagpur bench of Bombay High Court to clear all unauthorised constructions from every zone to minimise the parking woes faced by citizens across city due to commercial misuse of earmarked parking spaces.

The High Court had directed Municipal Commissioner to have one squad in each of the 10 zones in the city, for the “big clean-up” of parking spaces by way of removal of illegal encroachment. The Court had directed Municipal Commissioner to issue a Public Notice warning the premises’ owners of severe consequences, in case they fail to remove encroachments from the parking spaces within the stipulated time-frame and that too without any further notice. The committee headed by Divisional Commissioner Anoop Kumar which is entrusted with finding out long term, medium term measures to end the parking woes and traffic chaos held a meeting as per the directions of Nagpur Bench of Bombay High Court in Public Interest Litigation (PIL) 65/2012 regarding shrinking parking spaces in the city and reviewed the situation.

The number of private hospitals are increasing day by day in Dhantoli and Ramdaspeth areas and due to overflowing traffic and stationary parking, the road width has reduced posing problem for the smooth flow of traffic. The civic body has conducted a survey of buildings in all the zones including Ramdaspeth and Dhantoli. As per survey report, the construction in 465 buildings has been found as per sanctioned plan while unauthorised construction has been detected in 159 buildings. The civic body has demolished the illegal constructions of 154 buildings while remaining spaces will be cleared very soon. The NMC has issued notices to 39 buildings for illegal construction. Maharashtra Government is planning Orange City Medical Hub to resolve the traffic problems in the dense areas of the city. Traffic Police is also keeping a close watch on Dhantoli and Ramdaspeth areas. The Traffic Police has earmarked one way roads, no parking areas, single lane parking in these highly populated areas.
