‘Cities can not be smart unless they are sustainable’

TODAY the who’s who of the construction industry gathered to deliberate upon the sustainable development in the city at the conference on ‘Sustainable and Liveable Cities’ organised by CII Indian Green Building Council (IGBC) Vidarbha Chapter and Shree Datta Meghe College of Architecture (SDMCA). On behalf of CII, Rahul Dixit, Chairman of CII Vidarbha Zonal Council and Director of Midland Diesel Services Pvt Ltd, welcomed all the dignitaries and praised them for taking part in the discussion on an issue which is the needof the hour.

Dixit informed the audience about India’s leadership role in the green building movement and also highlighted the good work done by IGBC Vidarbha Chapter within a short span of one year. Dr U P Waghe, Principal of Y C College of Engineering while delivering special address on the occasion emphasised on the need of collaboration between CII IGBC and institutions to encourge the young minds to inculcate green design and adopt it early in their career.

Delivering the theme address, Ar Ashok Mokha, Chairman of CII IGBC Vidarbha Chapter and Managing Director of Ashok Mokha Architects quoted about the rapid strides undertaken by Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Nagpur Metro in transforming Nagpur as a smart and sustainable city. However, he raised concerns over the quality of life in urban cities today. “Cities can not be smart unless they are sustainable and liveable,” Mokha pointed out.

Girish Gandhi, President of Vanrai Foundation, touched upon the issues of climate change and shared that there’s a need for more such conferences to create awareness amongst masses and combat the issues pertaining to climate change. He appealed all the professionals in construction industry to design and build responsibly.

The event was attended by over 110 delegates representing the construction industry like architects, builders, corporates, green building consultants and green product manufacturers.
