AN OFF-SPINNER who can bowl leg-breaks is like a multi-lingual, said Sachin Tendulkar, reflecting on the growing demand for wrist spinners in limited-overs cricket given the difficult questions they are posing to batsmen all around. While Tendulkar did not take any names, his observation on off-spinners trying to bowl leg-break would certainly be music to Ravichandran Ashwin’s ears, as he is trying his hand at wrist spin with an eye on national comeback in the shorter versions. “I feel it can only help. It’s like you know two to three different languages. Now there is no harm in knowing five or six different languages. It can’t take away anything from you,” Tendulkar, who celebrated his 45th birthday on Tuesday, told PTI.

“It’s exactly the same when one develops more variations. So it’s wrong to say that they (finger spinners) are joining a bandwagon now that they are bowling leg-spin. No, they aren’t. Rather, we should see that they have put in effort to develop a delivery,” he said. And what does he make of the view that the off-spinners’ attempts are futile? “I think it’s wrong thinking of people (that off-spinners can’t bowl leg-breaks). I am not blaming the player here. I am blaming the people (perception) here. Leg-break could be just another weapon in your armoury.Tendulkar recalls
‘happy dents’ DENTS on a car are not known to please its owner but Tendulkar calls the ones on his car “happy dents” as they are a reminder of his first and only World Cup triumph.

The batting maestro recalled how his dented car added to the joy the day India won their second ODI World Cup, in 2011.“After we won the World Cup, Anjali (Tendulkar), being superstitious, didn’t want to be at the ground. I called her and said ‘what are you doing at home? You got to be here in the dressing room, we are all celebrating’,” Tendulkar recalled at the launch of a book. “Somehow she (Anjali) made it to the stadium and while she was getting there, just outside the stadium, people were dancing, celebrating, jumping on top of the cars.”

However, the delirious celebrations came to a halt the moment fans recognised Mrs Tendulkar. “They said ‘we can’t touch this car, we can’t do anything on this car’. Somehow she gets inside the stadium and then we were all celebrating in the dressing room and when it was time to go back to the hotel I looked at the car and wondered how there were dents on the roof of the car,” he said.“The driver said that ‘after I dropped madam, everyone started jumping and dancing on the top of the car’. These dents will always remind of that wonderful moment at the World Cup, so I call them ‘Happy Dents’,” he added.
